Abstract
As a surface organ, the skin has a complex system of defense and repair mechanisms that are linked in many ways; danger signals perceived in the epidermis activate immunological programs, inflammatory mediators are involved in controlling epidermal regeneration. Various subacute and chronic inflammatory skin diseases show characteristic patterns of inflammatory and epidermal response, such as psoriasis, pityriasis rubra pilaris, or lichen planus. Clinically, there are signs of an inflammatory component such as erythema, inflammatory plaques, papules, or nodules, as well as characteristic scaling. This chapter summarizes some of the dermatoses according to these phenotypic criteria. In the future, the cellular and molecular profiles of the diseases will also have to be considered in the classification.
