Zusammenfassung
Nach dem Urknall vor etwa 13,7 Milliarden Jahren, bei dem die Elemente Wasserstoff und Helium entstanden, bildeten sich Sterne und ganze Galaxien. In diesen heißen und dichten Objekten finden kernphysikalische Prozesse statt, bei denen immer schwerere Elemente synthetisiert werden. So verschmelzen („fusionieren“) zum Beispiel drei Heliumkerne zu Kohlenstoff, zwei Kohlenstoffkerne zu Magnesium und so weiter. Derartige Fusionsprozesse enden stets bei Eisen. Schwerere Elemente – und damit die Mehrzahl aller Elemente im Periodensystem – werden auf den Neutroneneinfang von Atomkernen zurückgeführt. Dabei entstehen radioaktive Kerne, die schließlich wieder in stabile zerfallen. Dieser Prozess kann je nach den vorhandenen Neutronenflüssen langsam („slow“) oder rasch („rapid“) verlaufen. Die Neutronen für den s- und r-Prozess stammen dabei aus Supernova-Explosionen oder – wie erst kürzlich erstmals in astronomischen Beobachtungen nachgewiesen – aus der Vereinigung („merger“) von zwei Neutronensternen.
