Zusammenfassung
Die zirkadiane Rhythmik hat eine Periodenlänge von etwa 24 Stunden und reguliert physiologische Funktionen und Verhalten des Organismus im Einklang mit dem natürlichen Tag-Nacht-Wechsel. Schlaf ist ein den gesamten Organismus umfassender Zustand, dessen zeitliche Regulation stark durch die zirkadiane Rhythmik beeinflusst wird. Intrazelluläre molekulare Uhren generieren zirkadiane Rhythmen verschiedenster zellulärer Funktionen. Im Unterschied zu Wachheit ist Schlaf durch einen weitgehenden Verlust des Bewusstseins und motorische Inaktivität sowie durch spezifische vegetative und endokrine Regulationsprozesse charakterisiert. Schlaf ist kein einheitlicher Zustand, sondern setzt sich aus Non-REM- (für „rapid eye movement“) und REM-Schlafphasen zusammen, die im nächtlichen Schlaf zyklisch durchlaufen werden. Schlaf hat vielfältige Funktionen. Seine kognitiven, insbesondere Gedächtnis bildenden Funktionen, könnten erklären, warum Schlaf mit Bewusstseinsverlust einhergeht.
