Zusammenfassung
Die Renaturierungsökologie hat sich in den vergangen 20 Jahren neben dem konservierenden Flächenschutz zu einer tragenden Säule des Naturschutzes entwickelt. Die Situation zahlreicher seltener und gefährdeter Arten und Lebensräume kann heute nur noch durch Renaturierung, das heißt durch Rückführung früher eingetretener Degradationen stabilisiert und verbessert werden. Die zunehmende Degradation von Ökosystemen sowie die komplexeren Ansprüche der menschlichen Gesellschaft an deren Funktionen und Dienstleistungen erweisen sich dabei als Hauptgrund für den enormen Bedeutungszuwachs der Renaturierungsökologie als Teil des Naturschutzes. Ein Schwerpunkt renaturierungsökologischen Handelns liegt immer noch auf dem Schutz der Biodiversität, jedoch gewinnen Synergien mit unterstützenden, regulierenden und kulturellen Ökosystemfunktionen und Ökosystemdienstleistungen an Bedeutung. Das äußert sich unter anderem auch in einer Ausdehnung von Renaturierungsaktivitäten auf den urbanen Raum.
