Das »periphere Nervensystem« (PNS) umfasst die peripheren Nerven von deren Endausbreitungsgebieten bis zu den Wurzeln und Austrittsstellen sowie die peripheren Ganglien. Die Funktion eines peripheren Nervens hängt wesentlich von seiner myelinbedingten Isolation gegenüber seiner Umgebung ab. Erbliche, traumatische oder entzündliche Myelinisierungsschäden sind deshalb verheerend. Demgegenüber sind letale Ausgänge durch unbehandelte maligne Tumoren der Nervenscheide sehr selten.
