Zusammenfassung
Mit einem Urbanisierungsgrad von 82 % zählen die USA zu den weltweit am stärksten verstädterten Gesellschaften. Nur wenige andere Staaten, darunter selbstverständlich die Stadtstaaten wie Singapur oder Monaco, aber auch einige europäische und lateinamerikanische Länder, weisen noch höhere Werte auf. Bereits seit den 1920er-Jahren wohnen in den USA mehr Menschen in Städten als auf dem Lande – und dies, obwohl sich seit der Gründungszeit und der Loslösung vom kolonialen Mutterland ein tief verankertes, ideologisch motiviertes Misstrauen gegenüber Städten offenbarte, das auch vom Gründungsvater und dritten Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten, Thomas Jefferson, genährt wurde. So vertrat er die Vision von Amerika als einer Republik „tugendhafter Farmer“, in der auch die Ablehnung organisatorisch notwendiger Autoritätsstrukturen zum Ausdruck kam.
