Sozialen Spannungen fällt in der Soziologie eine zentrale Rolle zu. Georg Simmel, einer der Gründungsväter der Soziologie, legt dies eindrucksvoll dar. Beispielsweise beginnt sein Kapitel ‚Der Streit‘ mit der Feststellung, dass der Kampf eine Form der Vergesellschaftung ist (Simmel, 1908, S. 186). Vielmehr nimmt der Kampf für die Vergesellschaftung eine besondere Stellung ein.
