Zusammenfassung
Der modernen Gesellschaft gilt Innovation als Treiber für Entwicklung, Wachstum und Fortschritt. Im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts hat sich Innovation als eines der gesellschaftsleitenden Paradigmen etabliert, nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg mit zunehmender Verengung auf technologische Innovation. Seit einigen Jahren hat sich allerdings eine disparate Entwicklung von Erwartungen an Innovation und wahrgenommener Innovationsrealität eingestellt. Diese Entwicklung ist einerseits einem übersteigerten Anspruch an Innovation als Heilsbringerin, andererseits zunehmender Innovationskritik und -enttäuschung zuzuschreiben.

Wie aus der weiteren Argumentation dieses Beitrags kenntlich wird, referiert Kulturanthropologie als disziplinäre Verortung insbesondere auf die hermeneutische Tradition der oftmals als nordamerikanisch klassifizierten Kulturanthropologie. Eine hiermit verbundene Ideengeschichte entzieht sich jedoch zwangläufig klarer geographischer Zuordnung, waren doch eine Vielzahl der prägende Personen während der disziplinkonstituierenden Phase der Kulturanthropologie im nordamerikanischen Universitätssystem selbst Einwanderer aus Deutschland, Österreich oder anderen Ländern bzw. stammten von solchen ab oder standen im engen Austausch mit europäischen Wissenschaftlern, so z. B. Franz Boas, Robert H. Lowie, Alfred L. Kroeber oder Clyde Kluckhohn. Im Sinne einer ideengeschichtlichen histoire croisée zeigen sich vielfältige Anschluss- und Vergleichsmöglichkeiten an die bzw. mit den in anderen nationalen Wissenschaftssystemen verorteten anthropologischen Zugänge zu Innovation als Begriff und Praxis.
