Zusammenfassung
Seit den klassischen Pionierarbeiten von Adam Smith, Karl Marx, Werner Sombart, Max Weber, Joseph Schumpeter oder John Maynard Keynes sind eine Vielzahl von Einflussfaktoren untersucht worden, um die historisch beispiellose Entfesselung des modernen Kapitalismus zu erklären. Die „kapitalistische Dynamik“ wird seitdem auf den technologischen Fortschritt, die Entfaltung individueller Eigentumsrechte, die Vertiefung von Arbeitsteilung, Markttausch und Wettbewerb, den Zwang zur Kapitalakkumulation, den politisch-institutionellen Wandel oder etwa die Diffusion neuer kultureller Wertideen zurückgeführt. In der Monografie Imaginierte Zukunft unternimmt Jens Beckert nun den Versuch, einen „nicht weniger wichtigen Aspekt“ der kapitalistischen Dynamik zu untersuchen, der in allen anderen Erklärungsansätzen mehr oder weniger ignoriert worden sei.
