Zusammenfassung
Die Nachricht vom Tode Raymond Arons kam für den Kenner seines Werkes nicht ganz unerwartet, hatten sich doch schon seit seinem Buch über „Die Etappen des soziologischen Denkens“ (Paris 1967; deutsche Ausgabe 1971) die Schatten einer für ihn so typischen Melancholie (die „tristesse de Raymond Aron“, wie man in Paris sagte) bemerkbar gemacht, die ihn mit Zweifeln heimsuchte, ob er wohl sein Werk würde vollenden können. Für einen so vielbeschäftigten Menschen ein seltsames Eingeständnis am Ende eines langen Lebens, das er mit einer geradezu unglaublichen Schaffenskraft als hochkarätiger Journalist im „Figaro“, als immer bestorientierter soziologisch-politischer Gegenwartshistoriker und -kritiker und schließlich als akademischer Lehrer am „Collège de France“ erfüllt hatte.
