Im Marketing wird teilweise vom idealen oder intendierten Image gesprochen, so von Dowling (1993), der die Marketingkommunikation ansieht als „an attempt by the organisation to project its ‚ideal self-image‘ to both internal and external people“ (S. 104).

Bei Wartick (1992) kommt die kollektive Natur der Reputation jedoch deutlich zum Ausdruck, wenn er Reputation definiert als „the aggregation of a single stakeholder’s perceptions of how well organizational responses are meeting the demands and expectations of many organizational stakeholders“ (S. 34).

Ökonomische Reputationsmodelle gehen also von einer engen Kopplung zwischen vergangenen Handlungen und zukünftigen Erwartungen aus; „you make judgements about past observations, and use these signals to form beliefs in predicting her future actions“ (Weigelt & Camerer, 1988, S. 444).
