Zusammenfassung
Entrepreneurship beschäftigt sich hauptsächlich mit der Gründung innovativer Unternehmen und der Schaffung neuer wirtschaftlicher Strukturen, schließt aber andere Varianten wie den Kauf eines Unternehmens oder den Lizenzverkauf nicht per se aus. Auf einer Makroebene ist Entrepreneurship ein Prozess der kreativen Zerstörung. Unternehmerinnen und Unternehmer sind für diesen Prozess ein zentrales Element: Sie identifizieren Gelegenheiten und machen neue Technologien und Konzepte wirtschaftlich nutzbar. Im Rahmen dieses Lehrbuchs wird eine prozessorientierte Sicht von Entrepreneurship angewendet, die das Erkennen, Evaluieren und Nutzen von unternehmerischen Gelegenheiten umfasst. Die Existenz von unternehmerischen Gelegenheiten wird mit dem Bestehen von wirtschaftlichen Ungleichgewichten und asymmetrischen Informationen begründet. Das Erkennen von Gelegenheiten ist eng an die Person des Unternehmers bzw. der Unternehmerin gebunden, wobei Vorkenntnisse und kognitive Eigenschaften eine große Rolle spielen. Bei der Evaluierung einer Gelegenheit ist es für die Unternehmerin oder den Unternehmer maßgeblich, ob nach seiner Einschätzung der Nutzen einer unternehmerischen Gelegenheit größer ist als die Opportunitätskosten, die ihm durch das Vernachlässigen von Alternativen entstehen. Für die Nutzung einer unternehmerischen Gelegenheit kommen zwei grundsätzliche institutionelle Arrangements infrage: die Gründung einer Unternehmung oder der Verkauf der Gelegenheit am Markt. Die Begriffe Entrepreneurship und kleine und mittlere Unternehmen sind eng miteinander verbunden, aber nicht deckungsgleich. Entrepreneurship ist v. a. in den frühen Phasen eines Unternehmens von Bedeutung, wohingegen in späteren Phasen meist die Sicherung und Steigerung der Effizienz im Vordergrund stehen.
