Zusammenfassung
Die Beiträge in diesem Band diskutieren Legitimität als „essentially contested concept“. Die empirische Untersuchung von Legitimität wirft zahlreiche theoretische, konzeptionelle und methodische Fragen auf. Dabei sind drei Achsen von theoretisch-konzeptionellen Überlegungen zu benennen: das Verhältnis von normativ-theoretischen und von empirisch-analytisch orientierten Anteilen und Zugängen im Bereich der Legitimitätsforschung; die Frage, ob Legitimität als Zustand oder Legitimation als Prozess untersucht werden soll; und das Verhältnis dreier Komponenten von Legitimität und Legitimationsprozessen: Input, Throughput und Output. Diese Achsen der Konzeptualisierung von Legitimität werden in den Beiträgen des Bandes in Bezug auf verschiedene Felder und Methoden, für etablierte Demokratien, Autokratien und die Europäische Union sowie für quantitative, qualitative und mixed-methods Zugänge aufgegriffen.
