Zusammenfassung

Die Krisentendenzen, die sich seit Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts in der Finanzwirtschaft und in den politischen Institutionen Bahn brechen sowie den gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt und das Funktionieren des politischen Systems der USA unterminieren, könnten auf den ersten Blick als völlig neuartige Entwicklungen interpretiert werden. Aber dieser Eindruck trügt. Die Krisen verlaufen in Mustern, politische Akteure beziehen sich auf teils bis zur Amerikanischen Revolution zurückreichende Diskurse und Legitimationsnarrative und sind nicht zuletzt in ihrem politischen Handeln mal mehr, mal weniger an institutionelle Pfadabhängigkeiten und Sachzwänge gebunden. Der Fortgang der Geschichte ist zwar keine ewige Wiederholung des schon da Gewesenen – er bleibt ungewiss. Doch die Muster, in denen er sich vollzieht, lassen sich nur vor diesem größeren Gesamtbild erklären und verstehen.
