In diesem Werk entwickelt Burt die Grundlagen einer strukturellen Handlungstheorie. Er greift hierzu vor allem auf Konzepte der soziologischen Netzwerkforschung zurück, bezieht sich aber auf die Arbeiten von Coleman, Merton, Parsons und anderen Klassikern der soziologischen Theorie. Ziel des Werkes ist es, eine Brücke zwischen den zwei basalen Ansätzen der Handlungstheorie zu schlagen.
