Zusammenfassung

Der Beitrag beschreibt zunächst anhand empirischer Daten die scheinbar überraschende Entwicklung Tschechiens von einem Land mit hervorragenden Indikatoren der Demokratisierung hin zu Phänomenen, die es als Problemkind erscheinen lassen. Deutschlands Nachbar erweist sich somit als wichtiger Testfall für die Brauchbarkeit sozialwissenschaftlicher Theorien und Methoden. Der zweite Abschnitt gibt einen Überblick über die Thematisierung Tschechiens in der politikwissenschaftlichen Forschung. Er zeigt zum einen, dass die scheinbar neuen Probleme weder im historischen Längsschnitt noch im internationalen Vergleich komplette Ausreißer sind und zum anderen, dass sich die eigentlichen Problemwahrnehmungen unterhalb des neuen Krisennarrativs deutlich unterscheiden. Davon ausgehend, benennt der letzte Teil Forschungsbedarfe, die künftig gedeckt werden sollten.
