Märkte werden in der Soziologie als sozial geregelte, strukturierte Orte definiert, an denen Güter und Leistungen getauscht werden. Marktbeziehungen werden als eine besondere Form von Tauschbeziehungen verstanden. „Der Tausch kann sich auf alles erstrecken, was sich in irgendeiner Art in die Verfügung eines anderen ‚übertragen‘ lässt und wofür ein Partner Entgelt zu geben bereit ist“ (Weber, 1985: 37).
