Zusammenfassung
Emotionen sind zentrale Bindeglieder zwischen Akteuren, Kultur und Gesellschaftsstruktur und rücken als spezifische Art des ‚Weltbezugs‘ in den Mittelpunkt (kultur-)soziologischer Forschung. Die Soziologie der Emotionen hat seit den 1970er-Jahren strukturalistische, behavioristische, sozialkonstruktivistische und phänomenologische Emotionstheorien hervorgebracht, deren Verschränkung für eine soziologisch angemessene Untersuchung von Gefühlen unerlässlich ist. Emotionen sind wesentlich mit habituellen, inkorporierten Dispositionen verknüpft, die aus der sozialstrukturellen, kulturellen und historisch stets spezifischen gesellschaftlichen Einbettung von Akteuren resultieren. Methodologisch bieten sich daher vor allem Forschungsstrategien an, die in der Lage sind, Alltagswirklichkeiten möglichst genau zu erfassen.
Einer Kultursoziologie der Gefühle kommt insbesondere in der Gesellschaftsdiagnose eine Schlüsselposition zu: Moderne westliche Gegenwartsgesellschaften lassen sich durch einen kulturellen Wandel der Emotionalisierung – der expliziten Thematisierung, Förderung, Steuerung und In-Wert-Setzung von Emotionen – charakterisieren. Gefühle sind nicht mehr allein Objekte subjektiver und sozialer Kontrolle, sondern werden zu Gegenständen zahlreicher Sozialtechniken, die auf eine Optimierung des emotionalen Erlebens, Handelns und Darstellens abzielen. Damit gehen paradoxe Effekte einher, deren Erforschung ein zentrales Thema der Kultursoziologie der Gefühle in der Gegenwart ist.

Für den strategischen Einsatz von Gefühlen ist ein solcher subjektiver ‚Authentizitätsglaube‘ unerlässlich, nicht eine wie auch immer verstandene ‚Authentizität‘ selbst (Neckel 2014).
