Abstract
With its Energiewende, Germany is neither the world nor the European champion in renewable electricity generation. Other European countries, like Sweden, Norway and Austria have higher shares of renewable electricity in the power mix, mainly thanks to the substantial amounts of hydropower capacities built in the past. Countries like Denmark, Ireland or Spain have higher shares of wind power than Germany. Italy has a higher share of solar power than Germany. These latter examples show that Germany is not alone on the way of the energy transition. However, the German Energiewende offers a unique opportunity to analyze the power system interaction between large amounts of variable renewables, both wind and solar, and a diverse conventional power plant fleet, including significant capacities of gas, hard coal, lignite and nuclear power plants.
