Zusammenfassung
Der Beitrag gibt einen Überblick über Wahlforschung in der Tradition von Wahlgeographie und Politischer Ökologie. Gestützt auf eine Abgrenzung von Wahlgeographie und Politischer Ökologie, werden zunächst die für das Teilgebiet zentralen Arbeiten von André Siegfried und Rudolf Heberle mit ihrer Argumentation und ihren Schlußfolgerungen dargestellt. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden jüngere Entwicklungstendenzen in der Forschung zur Rolle räumlicher Faktoren für das Wahlverhalten nachgezeichnet, wobei das Gerrymandering besonders hervorgehoben wird. Abschließend diskutiert der Beitrag methodische und methodologische Fragen.

Beim Lesen dieser Passage sollte nicht vergessen werden daß es weder Umfragedaten noch Meinungsforschung gab, als André Siegfried sein großangelegtes „politisches Bild“ Westfrankreichs in Angriff nahm (ursprünglich war es viel ehrgeiziger angelegt: es sollte nur den ersten Teil eines ganz Frankreich umfassenden Gesamtgemäldes darstellen). Was ihm zur Verfügung stand, waren Wahl‑ und Zensusdaten auf Gebietsebene, also Aggregatdaten, sowie vielfältige historische und geographische Informationen über die Départements, Arrondissements (Kreise), Kantone, Gemeinden und Stimmbezirke seines Untersuchungsgebietes.

Schon die nächste Generation der französischen Wahlgeographen führte ihre Untersuchungen hauptsächlich auf Gemeindeebene durch, da selbst die Kantone noch zu heterogen seien.

Auch dies ist eine ausgesprochen „moderne“ Forderung, die längere Zeit von der Historischen Wahlforschung zu wenig berücksichtigt worden ist und sich erst heute voll durchzusetzen beginnt.
