Gesellschaft in der Krise? Neue Ungleichheiten in den USA

Zusammenfassung

Dieser Artikel erläutert die Entwicklung gesellschaftlicher Ungleichheiten in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika im Laufe des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts. Er leistet einen Überblick über die statistischen Details und die entscheidenden Faktoren und Dynamiken wachsender sozio-ökonomischer Ungleichheiten und bespricht deren Auswirkungen auf politische Prozesse in den USA. Wir argumentieren, dass die neuen Ungleichheiten nur erklärt werden können, wenn jüngere neoliberale Entwicklungstendenzen zusammengedacht werden mit ungelösten strukturellen Problemen des demokratischen Systems in den Vereinigten Staaten.

    Gemeinhin spricht man in der einschlägigen US-amerikanischen Fachliteratur vom Wohlfahrtsstaat (welfare state) oder ausschließlich von Sozialpolitik. Wir verwenden bewusst den Begriff des Sozial- und Interventionsstaats, um auch nicht primär sozialpolitische Interventionsformen wie zum Beispiel Arbeitsmarkt-, Bildungspolitik oder auch die Regulierung der Finanzmärkte in den Blick zu nehmen.
