Zusammenfassung
Der Beitrag erklärt, was Sozialwissenschaftler unter Extremismus verstehen und warum die Erforschung extremer Bewegungen und Parteien für die vergleichende Politikwissenschaft von einer großen, allzu häufig unterschätzten Bedeutung ist. Der Überblick beschränkt sich auf die empirische Forschung zur linken und rechten Variante des Extremismus. Es wird eine Karte entfaltet, auf der sich neben gut erschlossenen Bereichen (etwa Aufstieg des Faschismus in der Zwischenkriegszeit) noch ausgesprochen viele blinde Flecken zeigen (etwa zur Bedeutung extremistischer Parteien in Entwicklungsländern wie Indien). Den Forschungszweig kennzeichnet noch ein gewisser Parochialismus. Phänomene jenseits Europas finden zu wenig Beachtung. Besonders zahlreich sind zudem die Desiderate im Bereich der Forschung zum Linksextremismus.
