Zusammenfassung
Es werden der Forschungsstand sowie der Stand der Technik im Hinblick auf die Potenziale der automatischen Wegeerfassung zusammengefasst. Im Fokus stehen dabei vor allem die großen Haushaltssurveys aus den Vereinigten Staaten zu Beginn der 2000er-Jahre sowie weitere Arbeiten zu Methoden der Nutzung von GPS für die Verkehrsforschung. Jedes der traditionellen Lokalisierungsverfahren besitzt dabei Defizite, die auf die technische Konzeption und infrastrukturellen Grundlagen zurückgeführt werden können. Über Smartphone-Tracking kann hingegen über mehrere Tage hinweg bei der Wegeerfassung durchaus eine so hohe Datengenauigkeit erreicht werden, dass es als innovatives Tool für Verkehrsplanung und Mobilitätsforschung große Erwartungen hervorruft.

NAVSTAR GPS steht für „NAVigation System with Time And Ranging Global Positioning System)“. Der Oberbegriff satellitengestützter Verfahren lautet GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System). Neben GPS existieren einige globale oder regional ergänzende Systeme wie das russische GLONASS oder das chinesische Compass. In Europa befindet sich das gemeinsam von der EU und der europäischen Raumfahrtbehörde ESA entwickelt System Galileo seit 2006 im Aufbau und wird voraussichtlich im Jahr 2014/2015 erste Dienste anbieten (BMVBS 2013).
