Abstract
Gerüchte sind zweifellos älter als Radio, Fernsehen oder Internet, doch hat die Verbreitung von Gerüchten durch Medienrevolutionen vom Buchdruck bis zum mobilen Netz mit dem zur Routine gewordenen „Sharing“ per Mausklick beachtlich an Dynamik und Brisanz gewonnen. Ist also, so könnte man fragen, die Ausbreitung von Geheimnissen, unbestätigten Meldungen und Hörensagen nicht doch ein soziotechnischer Effekt des World Wide Web mit seinen Partizipationsappellen und seinen gigantischen, leicht verfügbaren Archiven? Am Beispiel einer Pressefotografie, die am 1. Mai 2011 im Situation Room des Weißen Hauses in Washington aufgenommen und innerhalb weniger Minuten nach der Tötung Osama bin Ladens in Abbottabad/Pakistan über Flickr, Twitter und Facebook weltweit verbreitet wurde, geht mein Artikel der Frage nach, wie aus einer zunächst unkommentierten Fotografie ein Gerücht wird und welchen Beitrag Geheimnisse, Narrationen und heute gängige Praktiken der Netzkultur wie Teilen, Posten oder Modifizieren zum Entstehen eines Gerüchts im World Wide Web leisten.
