Abstract
Like any other market the financial market does not run on money; it runs on trust (cf. Nell Minow, an influential corporate governance expert and editor of The Corporate Library in: Allen 2002). For that reason building up trust among a company’s stakeholders becomes one of the main challenges for companies in general. As a consequence, the issue of trustworthiness and credibility has the attention of the investor relations function, i.e. the function in the company that is responsible for the communication between the company and its investors. It is even considered the most important aspect of a company’s investor relations program (Argenti 1998). In a time where the business environment is characterized by a large degree of change, uncertainty, and risk and the stakeholder attitude towards the players in the financial market, such as companies as investment objects, is characterized by distrust and caution, the investor relations function’s focus on trustworthiness and credibility gains importance.
