Zusammenfassung
Funktionalistisch betrachtet lassen sich Waren und Dienstleistungen des Konsummarktes mit traditionell-religiösen Gütern in Zusammenhang setzen. Der Austausch des religiösen Inventars durch marktbezogene Elemente ist dabei als Folge der ökonomischen Entwicklung zu verstehen. Durch eine umfassende Vermarktlichung entwickelt sich ein religiöser Wandel, der in einer Verlagerung religiös konnotierter Aktivitäten und Imaginationen in das Kraftfeld des Marktes besteht. Dieser religiöse Wandel ist als Prozess der Kommodifizierung zu verstehen.

Ähnlich positiv befördern die Glaubensinhalte wiederum die Entstehung der Kollektivkräfte, indem sie innerhalb der Rituale als inhaltliche Referenz gewählt werden. Die drei Elemente sind deshalb nicht unabhängig voneinander zu denken, sondern nur in Kombination wirksam.

Durkheims Ansatz steht deshalb nicht unversöhnlich jenem Max Webers gegenüber, auch wenn er eine andere Zielsetzung verfolgt. Schließlich können die einmal etablierten Glaubensinhalte durchaus ein Eigenleben entwickeln, das auf die (religiöse und ggf. weltliche) Praxis zurückwirkt (obgleich dieser Fall von Durkheim natürlich nicht explizit thematisiert wird, weil es ihm um die Frage der Bedeutung von Religion bei der Entstehung von Gesellschaft geht und nicht um den spezifischen Einfluss religiöser Ideen auf die Entwicklung von Gesellschaften). Auszuschließen ist nach Durkheim nur, dass die Glaubensinhalte wirksam bleiben, wenn die Religion selbst nicht mehr in der Lage ist, das Kollektivleben zu entfachen.
