Zusammenfassung
Urbanisierung ist eines der prägenden Phänomene des 21. Jahrhunderts, das alle Regionen der Erde erfasst hat. Bei einer auf über neun Milliarden Menschen anwachsenden Weltbevölkerung ist auch keine ernsthafte Alternative zur Stadt als menschliches Habitat zu erkennen. Denn sie ist auch aus einer ökologischen Perspektive die effektivste und effizienteste Organisationsform menschlichen Lebens. Allerdings erzeugen Städte, so wie wir sie kennen, große Umweltbelastungen, von denen nicht nur die Stadtbewohner selber betroffen sind, sondern mit denen globale Auswirkungen einhergehen. Klimawandel, die Ausbeutung fossiler Energieträger und nicht erneuerbarer Rohstoffe, die Übernutzung der natürlichen Ressourcen, sowie nicht zuletzt die enorme Problematik der Freisetzung von Abfallstoffen in die Umwelt, die erst langsam in ihrem vollen Umfang erkannt wird, sind an vorderster Stelle zu nennen.
