Zusammenfassung
Um Missverständnisse zu vermeiden, soll zunächst Selbstbewusstsein im umgangssprachlichen Sinne abgegrenzt werden. Im Alltag sprechen wir einer Person Selbstbewusstsein zu, wenn wir ein besonders sicheres und couragiertes Auftreten charakterisieren möchten. Dagegen ist mit Selbstbewusstsein im philosophischen Sinne die Fähigkeit und der Zustand gemeint, ein Bewusstsein von seinen eigenen Zuständen (Eigenschaften oder Prozessen) zu haben. Es geht im Folgenden ausschließlich um Selbstbewusstsein im philosophischen Sinne und dabei insbesondere um ein Bewusstsein von den eigenen mentalen Zuständen. Prinzipiell soll aber hier ein Bewusstsein von eigenen physischen Zuständen, z. B. eigenen Körperzuständen, einbezogen werden; denn eine Person, die ein Bewusstsein davon hat, dass sie ihre Beine über Kreuz geschlagen hat oder dass sie eine schwarze Hose trägt, kann dieses nur haben, wenn sie über eine für Selbstbewusstsein charakteristische Fähigkeit zur Selbstbezugnahme verfügt, die wir im Fall von sprachlichen Repräsentationen mit der Verwendung des Wortes „ich“ ausdrücken. Darauf werden wir gleich zurückkommen.
