Zusammenfassung
Die Anstrengungen seitens der Cultural Studies, den Popularitäts- wie auch den Kulturbegriff theoretisch zu fundieren (vgl. Hall 1981, S. 227; Williams 1981, 1985, S. 87–93, S. 192–197), charakterisieren Populärkultur als weites, übergreifendes Forschungsfeld, das zu einer beeindruckenden Vielfalt an Konzepten geführt hat, die mal die Trägerschaft von Populärkultur betonen (Massenkultur, Volkskultur) (→ Jugend-, Sub- und Fankulturen), mal ökonomische Aspekte (Kulturindustrie, Kommerzkultur, Konsumkultur) (→ Kommerzialisierung) oder lebensweltliche Kontexte (Alltagskultur, Erlebniskultur, Spaßkultur) (→ Alltag und Alltagswelt) in den Blick nehmen oder aber konkret auf die für Populärkultur wesentlichen Vermittlungs- und Zirkulationsfunktionen von Medien abzielen (→ Medienkultur). Bis heute wird die theoretische Erschließung populärkultureller Phänomene von einem vermeintlichen Gegensatz zwischen Hochund Populärkultur geprägt und hat neben der Kulturwissenschaft, der Soziologie und der Kommunikations- und Medienwissenschaft auch das Interesse zahlreicher weiterer Forschungsdisziplinen geweckt, unter anderem der Philosophie, Filmwissenschaft, Geschichtswissenschaft und Literaturwissenschaft bis hin zu den Wirtschaftswissenschaften.
