Zusammenfassung
Als Tocqueville beschloss, als Politiker aktiv zu werden, bezeichnete er selbst es als seinen „schönsten Traum“, in seinem Heimatland Frankreich zur Versöhnung zwischen dem Geist der Freiheit und dem Geist der Religion, der neuen demokratischen Gesellschaft und dem katholischen Klerus beizutragen (OT VII, 212). Durch die massiven Konfliktlinien, die im Gefolge der Französischen Revolution aufgebrochen waren, schien diese Versöhnung damals allerdings kaum im Bereich des Möglichen zu liegen und erwies sich die katholische Kirche im gesamten 19. Jahrhundert in erster Linie als Hort für reaktionäre Strömungen, die den Errungenschaften liberal-demokratischer Rechtsstaatlichkeit wenig abgewinnen konnten und häufig genug leidenschaftlich bekämpften.
