Zusammenfassung

Die keilschriftliche Überlieferung des Alten Orients im Zeitraum vom 3. Jahrtausend v.Chr. bis zur Zeitenwende bietet die früheste Evidenz für eine Tradition der Versepik überhaupt, zu der auch solche bekannten Werke der Weltliteratur wie das Gilgamesch-Epos zählen. Die dichterischen Erzählwerke dieses Zeitraums entstammen dabei einer vielzahl miteinander verbundener Kultur- und Sprachtraditionen. Das Kapitel bietet zuerst einen historischen Abriss der sumerischen, akkadischen, hethitischen und ugaritischen Versepik. Zusammenfassend und vergleichend werden anschließend die externen Gegebenheiten der Überlieferung, u.a. die Rolle der Schriftlichkeit und Mündlichkeit in der Gestaltung der Überlieferung, formale Gesichtspunkte sowie einige problemgeschichtliche Aspekte dieser Traditionen hervorgehoben.
