Zusammenfassung

In der nach dem ersten Erscheinen im Jahr 1798 mehrmals erweiterten und veränderten (1800, 1802, 1805) Anthologie legten Wordsworth und Coleridge ‚experimentelle‘ Gedichte vor, die sie nach von ihnen neu entwickelten Auffassungen vom dichterischen Vorgehen verfasst hatten. Ihre (nicht identischen) Dichtungstheorien finden sich im Vorwort zu den Lyrical Ballads von 1800 (überarbeitet 1802, 1836, 1850) und in Coleridges Biographia Literaria (1817). Die erste Ausgabe der Lyrical Ballads enthält 19 Beispiele für Wordsworths ‚einfache‘ und vier Proben von Coleridges ‚übernatürlicher‘ Dichtung (darunter „The Rime of the Ancient Mariner“; Das Lied des alten Seemanns).
