Sohn einer Kairoer Gelehrten- und Schriftstellerfamilie; kurzes Studium an der Hochschule für Landwirtschaft; anschließend anderthalb Jahre Beamter im Justiz-, dann im Außenministerium; danach freier Autor von Kurzgeschichten, Romanen und Dramen; Mitglied der Akademie für Arabische Sprache und des Obersten Rates zum Schutz der Künste, Literatur und Sozialwissenschaft; gilt als Vater der ägyptischen Kurzgeschichte.
