Aus angesehener Gutsbesitzerfamilie; lernte früh den Koran auswendig; Unterricht in Arabisch und Persisch; bis 1884 Ausbildung am theologischen Seminar (Dāru ˈl-ʿUlūm) in Deoband; zwei Pilgerfahrten nach Mekka und Medina; 14 Jahre lang Religionslehrer in Kanpur; ausgezeichneter Ruf als Theologe und Mystiker; seine Vorlesungen erschienen gedruckt; prägte viele bedeutende zukünftige Theologen und Islam-Aktivisten; viele Vortragsreisen; zahlreiche Übersetzungen und Kommentare zum Koran, Rechtsgutachten, religiöse Traktate, Handbücher; einige Werke auch auf Arabisch und Persisch.
