Zusammenfassung
Der beispiellose Einfluss Ovids auf die Kunstgeschichte geht weniger von seinen erotischen Dichtungen oder den Exilelegien als von den Fasti, vor allem aber von den Metamorphosen aus. Ebenfalls auf die Musik hat Ovid vor allem über die Metamorphosen bis in die Gegenwart gewirkt (s. Kap. 53 und 54). Mit ihrer beispiellosen Anschaulichkeit hat die ovidische ›Bibel der Künstler‹ die Wirkung der ebenfalls bildfähigen Mythendarstellungen aus den erotischen Dichtungen weitgehend ersetzt, zumal sie die mythischen Narrative oft ausführlicher präsentiert (die Liebeskunst bietet dagegen die längsten Erzählungen von Ariadne und Bacchus, Daedalus und Icarus sowie Venus und Mars; zudem ist sie die ovidische Hauptquelle für den Raub der Sabinerinnen und die Geschichte von Pasiphaë und dem kretischen Stier).
