Bodmer in der Schweiz, danach als Hauslehrer in Zürich und Bern; 1760 Kanzleiverwalter in Biberach; 1769 Professor für Philosophie in Erfurt; 1772 Hauslehrer des Erbprinzen Carl August in Weimar; ab 1773 Herausgabe des Teutschen Merkur; ab 1775 freier Schriftsteller; 1797–1803 auf Gut Oßmannstedt bei Weimar; 1803 Rückkehr nach Weimar; gehörte zum Kreis um Goethe, Herder und die Herzogin Anna Amalia; schrieb eine Vielzahl Epen, Romane und Literaturkritiken und übersetzte zahlreiche Dramen Shakespeares sowie Werke antiker Autoren.
