Zusammenfassung

Die Ethnologie befasst sich mit dem Traum unter dem Aspekt der kulturellen Vielfalt, während der Schlaf ein nahezu unbearbeitetes Feld darstellt. Dabei treten zwei jener produktiven Widersprüche, die diese Disziplin antreiben, in besonderer Schärfe hervor. Der erste Widerspruch besteht zwischen dem kulturrelativistischen Anspruch, die Dinge aus der Sicht der Erforschten zu betrachten, und der Notwendigkeit, die Analyse kultureller Differenz in einen Wissenschaftsdiskurs mit universalistischen Grundlagen einzubetten. Im Fall des Traumes tritt dieser Widerspruch hervor, da die moderne Wissenschaft den Traum allein als intrapsychisches Ereignis gelten lässt, während er für die Untersuchten mitunter eine Kommunikation mit anderen Menschen oder Nichtmenschen darstellt oder Auskunft über die Welt außerhalb des Träumenden liefert (s. Kap. 3).
