Die Universität, sprachlich abgeleitet von der »universitas magistrorum et scholarium« (der Gemeinschaft der Lehrenden und Lernenden), ist die weltweit verbreitetste Institution höherer Bildung. Zu ihren Aufgaben zählen Lehre und Forschung, und im Unterschied zu anderen wissenschaftlichen Institutionen ist sie in der Lage, akademische Grade wie etwa den Magister oder Doktorgrad zu verleihen.
