Big Data, also die maschinelle Erfassung und Auswertung großer Datenmengen, ist ein zentrales Schlagwort unserer Zeit. Fortschritte im Hard- und Softwarebereich haben eine immer umfassendere Verdatung der Welt nicht nur technisch möglich, sondern auch wirtschaftlich attraktiv gemacht. Bereiche, die nicht von digitalen Umwälzungsprozessen betroffen sind, sind rar. Von der Industrie 4.0 zur Präzisionsmedizin, vom Social Scoring bei der Kreditvergabe zur vorhersagenden Polizeiarbeit, von der personalisierten Werbungzur Smart City – egal ob in der Privatwirtschaft oder im öffentlichen Sektor, Big-Data-basierte Analyseverfahren gelten als Schlüsseltechnologie, mit deren Hilfe neue Erkenntnisse gewonnen und Entscheidungsprozesse optimiert werden sollen.
