Abstract
The beginning of 2011 was marked by the emergence of a new cycle of protests around the world such as the Arab Spring, the Occupy Movement and the Indignados in Southern Europe. Portugal and Spain merge into this cycle of mobilisations in a context of economic and social crises marked by the implementation of austerity measures. Both societies have been analysed as carrying low levels of political and civic engagement in public sphere issues. Nevertheless, there are also some features that set them apart, namely a wider support of the Spanish society to associations that embody post-materialist values and unconventional forms of civic action. However, in the context of anti-austerity protest, it is possible to envisage, in Portuguese society, new forms of mobilisations but comparing with the Spanish case, there are strong contrasts regarding these political dynamics. Using these points as the basis of discussion, our focus is on the evolution and spread of the protests in the two countries.
