Abstract
Since the establishment of Turkey as a nation state in the beginning of the twentieth century, government has tried to use architectural heritage as an instrument for nation-building . However, this has not been done without disagreement on the meaning of many heritage sites in the country. These sites were de-contextualised and subsequently re-contextualised to fit the new social values government ascribed to them, leading to the exclusion of minority communities. This chapter examines the processes of de- and re-contextualisation of Greek Orthodox places of worship in Asia Minor that have been vandalised, neglected or reused in accordance with the national interest and policies, thus revealing government’s role in cultural contestation .
