Abstract
Recently, the fast evolution of wireless technologies has enabled the development of multi-mode terminals which can support more radio interfaces. In this context, the users can enjoy various mobile applications by using network at anytime and anywhere with the best quality of service (QoS). The IEEE 802.21 is a recent standard that aims at enabling seamless vertical handover between heterogeneous technologies.
In this paper we propose the performance analysis of the vertical handover decision between two networks WiFi (IEEE 802.11) and 3G (UMTS) by using IEEE 802.21 for two traffic flows: FTP and video streaming. The QoS metrics used for this evaluation include throughput, end-to-end delay and jitter. The Testbed for performance evaluation is done by using the ODTONE which is an open source platform implementing the IEEE 802.21 protocol.
