Noninfectious Complications of Peritoneal Dialysis

Abstract

There are a number of important noninfectious complications of peritoneal dialysis (PD). Some appear in dramatic fashion but are not associated with adverse effects, such as hemoperitoneum during menstruation. Others, such as encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis, present insidiously but are associated with poor outcomes. It is vital that the treating physician has a thorough knowledge of these complications in order to appropriately reassure, investigate, and treat patients on PD.

Some complications are related to the dialysis process itself. For example, raised intra-abdominal pressure can cause a variety of problems such as hernias and hydrothorax. Other more indirect complications can occur, and can be categorized based on the system affected. A variety of gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, respiratory, dermatological, musculoskeletal, and renal complications are discussed in this chapter.
