Abstract

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic, systemic, immunologically mediated disease of unknown etiology characterized by the presence of pathogenic autoantibodies and immune complexes. Systemic manifestations are varied and include cutaneous, renal, synovial, hematologic, and neurologic disease. Ophthalmic manifestations are similarly varied and include, most commonly, keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Retinal arteritis is a pathognomonic presentation. A variety of other neurophthalmic and uveitic presentations have also been documented. Treatment of ocular manifestations of SLE is directed at controlling the underlying autoimmune process with anti-inflammatory agents.
