Abstract
Within the framework of the European Neighbourhood Policy, the Eastern Partnership, established in 2009, aims to strengthen the relations between the European Union and the six neighboring countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine. So far cooperation has taken place both bilaterally and multilaterally in areas such as governance, economic development, energy efficiency, environmental protection, and civil society. However, the shape of these relations between the European Union and the individual Eastern Partnership countries varies widely, not just formally, but also within the specific policy areas. With regard to the area of energy and the related climate actions of the European Green Deal which the president of the European Commission presented in 2019, this chapter descriptively examines the specific and different relationship arrangements of the EU with its six Eastern neighbors. Thereby, the analysis follows the central questions of how the relationship between the European Union and each of the six Eastern Partnership countries has developed since the initiative’s launch in 2009 until today and what the current state of these relations is in the field of Energy policy.
