Abstract

The major steps of patch testing history covering more than one century are reported, starting with the first description of the method by Jadassohn in 1895. At the same period (1897), the pioneering work of Fabre in the field of contact urticaria is emphasized. Later on, the prominent work by Bruno Bloch in Zurich has led to the universality of the patch testing methodology. In more recent years, a major breakthrough was fulfilled by the founding of international working groups and societies, such as the International Contact Dermatitis Research Group (ICDRG), the North American Contact Dermatitis Group (NACDG), the European Environmental and Contact Dermatitis Research Group (EECDRG), and the European Society of Contact Dermatitis (ESCD).
