Abstract
The shipping industry has organized itself into various organisational forms that will eventually accomplish higher efficiency and effectiveness into the achievement of organisational and maritime transportation objectives. The in-house or third-party management of ships with its various structures and processes represents such a form. This chapter provides an overview of ship management fundamentals and addresses issues including company organisational structures, ship management activities and services, the concept of outsourcing ship management, ship registration, the regulatory environment especially with regards to environmental protection, energy efficiency and measuring and assessing ship management performance.
