Abstract
Romance identifies three distinct strains of conservatism found within the Republican Party and discusses how these strains manifested in the battle for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination. The chapter also draws clear distinctions between Donald Trump’s campaign and traditional forms of Republican conservatism. In addition, Romance investigates the differences in ideological perspectives of the 2016 Democratic Party candidates for the nomination about what it means to be liberal . He identifies common threads of disempowerment present in the narratives of Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, and Bernie Sanders and discusses what the 2016 election may mean for ideology within both major parties moving forward.
