Abstract
The failure of the so-called ‘war on drugs’ has become a truism of international policy discourses. The pursuit of a symmetrical, unconstrained and ultimately highly repressive and militarised ‘war’ strategy has not produced the desired results. The recognition of this has fuelled a tidal shift in global discourses, ultimately leading the most affected countries, including Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico, to call a UN General Assembly Special Session on Drugs (UNGASS) to discuss the current strategy in April 2016.
