Abstract
Considering the efficiency and cost, Permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) is the mostly preferred for variable speed small and standalone wind energy conversion system (WECS). This machine is one of the main components used in a horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) systems. This paper reviews the most common configurations of generators used in wind power systems (WPS), thus highlighted the main advantages and drawbacks of PMSG versus others generators. Despite the fact that the main disadvantage of PMSG related to high cost of permanent magnet, PMSG is not only more reliable and efficient but also needless of the gearbox. The main objective behind using the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms in WECS during the wind turbine working is tracking and extracting maximum available power from wind power. The MPPT algorithms can be classified into two basics categories: the direct power controller (DPC), and the indirect power controller (IPC).Tip Speed Ratio (TSR) control, and Perturb and Observe (P&O) algorithm are two selected methods of the MPPT algorithms using in WECS; they are reviewed, discussed and compared in this present paper. This review revels that the TSR control is more efficient and has a better dynamic, but requires a precise measure. The P&O algorithm is flexible and simple in implementation, but this method has many performance limits associated with the low efficiency and the optimum step-size problems.
